Holy Smoke

Harvey Keitel might have been easy on the eyes and might have had the charm of an alpha male of a monkey troop, but here, he’s played in a movie that’s more of a farce than a drama. Basically, this movie has no clue what it wants to do. At first, it tells a story of an insane Kate Winslet who has an equally insane family and then in some scenes, it all goes silent to create a wannabe funny comedy effect. (27/08/2016)

Jane Campion é uma feminista mas também uma artista sensível. O seu Fumo Sagrado é uma ode exata ao tema do homem forte a cair no abismo da atração animal duma femme-fatale. No filme, a imagem envolta em cores quentes desempenha um papel importante, reforçando a atmosfera sufocante do deserto australiano, no qual a história (por vezes sufocante) se desenrola num pequeno espaço isolado. Harvey Keitelé tão minimalista como sempre, mas encaixa-se bem em ambas as posições - um cowboy elegante em calças de ganga pretas e um pobre destruído com um vestido de mulher vermelho. Em termos de atuação, o filme é liderado por Kate Winslet, a importância da sua personagem cresce a cada minuto que passa, enfraquecendo a soberania do herói de Keitel. O filme tem uma conclusão e nada lhe falta. Embora não seja fácil de se deixar cativar, é difícil negar a sua originalidade narrativa e, por vezes, a sua franqueza controversa. Se tivesse abandonado a ótica de «art-wanna-be» e preferido uma intimidade que fizesse do espetador-voyer um espetador-participante, poderia ter sido inesquecível. (24/11/2006)

Holy Smoke is a film that relies heavily on a compelling premise and great performances from Kate Winslet and Harvey Keitel. The story itself, however, didn't engage me as much. I found it too drawn out and there were too many dead spots that only hindered the film. In short, a film that takes place in unfavourable looking locations (India and the Australian desert), and which was left with a lot of untapped potential - it could (should) have been either shorter or packed more punch.
