Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son, killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking The Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. Driven by his profound sadness and desire to understand his son better, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage, leaving his "California bubble life" behind. Armed with his son's backpack and guidebook, Tom navigates the 800 km pilgrimage from the French Pyrenees, to Santiago de Compostela in the north west of Spain, but soon discovers that he will not be alone on this journey. While walking The Camino, Tom meets other pilgrims from around the world, all broken and looking for greater meaning in their lives: a Dutchman (Yorick van Wageningen) a Canadian (Deborah Kara Unger) and an Irish writer (James Nesbitt) who is suffering from a bout of "writer's block." From the hardship experienced along "The Way" this unlikely quartet of misfits create an everlasting bond and Tom begins to learn what it means to be a citizen of the world again, and discovers the difference between "The life we live and the life we choose". Um road-(walk)-movie relaxado sobre a exploração e descoberta não só de pessoas e lugares, mas sobretudo de si próprio. Um grupo de quatro caminhantes de carácter bem-feito de diferentes partes do mundo, com os quais se rirão nos tempos felizes e se agarrarão a eles nos tristes. Estevez dirige duma forma relaxada, mas concentrada e precisa. Mais importante ainda, pode sentir que ele se empenha pessoalmente. É um filme pequeno e positivo, semelhante em atmosfera a Sideways de Payne.

Some people say the journey is the destination. For me, when I set out on a journey, there's always a purpose—whether it’s something small or a cleansing of the soul. I loved how The Way told its story so beautifully. And since I love traveling, giving this five stars wasn’t a hard decision. Honestly, even without my love for travel, it would’ve been close. The film offers a gorgeous story, incredible music, and a sense of universality that can resonate with anyone, especially those who have a passion for adventure. The stunning landscapes, the solitude, meeting new people, friendships, campfires—it’s all there. I feel like I need to rewatch this film, maybe even a few times. It’s just that beautiful. And those stamps? I was genuinely jealous!

Emilio Estevez proves that he is not only a quite capable actor but that he has a gift for writing a good story and eventually directing it. He quite cleverly cast his father, Martin Sheen, in the lead role, who shows that he is in a different league as an actor. And that's hardly saying anything. It's not about faith in God, it's about faith in ourselves and how we come to terms with our lives and what they bring.
