The prolific and manic Jess Franco has directed well over 200 films. Some are dire, the majority functional and a few are absolute classics of exploitation cinema. The Demons, Franco's shameless cash-in on Ken Russell's The Devils, is a true Franco masterpiece, featuring everything from torture, lesbian sex and demonic possession. The film centres on a witch who is burned at the stake by the inquisition but who, before the flames consume her, manages to curse the principal witchfinder and his minionswith dire results. What follows is a catalogue of depravity and sexual violence on a truly orgiastic scale while Franco's camera gleefully captures every perverse moment and gratuitous exposure of female flesh! Mamilos, pelos e rabos de celulite. Torturas inquisitoriais. O missionário de Satanás em lenços e leggings vermelhos, violando a personagem principal loira (a única que não tem celulite) por trás. Tudo nos recintos dos castelos e pátios históricos, em trajes de época dos dias da Condessa Bathory. Um filme longo erótico de exploitation, de cara séria, de duas horas. A sua narrativa de telenovela dá para rir, no entanto, está mais do lado de bruxas sensuais do que de inquisidores sádicos e inquisidoras lésbicas, ao mesmo tempo que baralha curiosamente as cartas entre eles. E, ao fazê-lo, mantém uma diversão de guilty pleasure até ao último minuto. Pelo menos no meu caso.

I must admit that She-Demons was a disappointment for me. Jesús Franco showed us that his style got old and exhausted quite quickly. Not to mention he decided to give this particular film almost two hours of runtime. He simply overdid it. There is nothing all that interesting in the plot that makes the film worth watching for more than an hour. There's hardly any horror, the atmosphere is lacking, the torture doesn't scare or disgust, and worst of all, the eroticism is superficial, even though the women are beautiful.
