Wildling - A Última Criatura

Well, that was really kitsch! It’s fine to look at; in terms of craftsmanship it’s very good – the cameraman knows how to produce nice shots – but other than that, Wilding is so sterile that I’m surprised at the positive reviews from abroad. It’s shallow where it pretends to be deep and cold as hell where it wants to show emotion. There’s absolutely no tension or fear because nobody has tried to generate any. If you fancy a horror/thriller genre film, go somewhere else. Wilding wants to be something more, but it fails to deliver anything “more”; and the last third can be laughable at times. (13/04/2018)

Gríma Wormtongue and Arwen reunite in a film about a not-so-ordinary girl with a troubled family heritage. Wildling impresses at glance with gorgeous locations and nice camera shots, but story-wise it's a flat and at times very muddled genre mash-up that doesn't really know what it wants to be for much of the running time. Anna's gradual metamorphosis isn't that badly executed, but unlike the thematically similar film like Ginger Snaps, for example, it lacks suspense and terror. The dramatic line of the film was also shallow, so as said, Wildling appeals mainly through the visuals and the participation of the actors from Lord of the Rings, period. (25/03/2020)

The entirety of the American horror film Wildling is actually about the transformation of a character, about understanding who she really is, how specific she is, how different she is. It's the classic American horror movie theme of a child turning into an adult, in this case a woman turning into a girl, but there are also other elements that she must embrace. The overall transformation is indeed filmed quite well. (30/08/2018)
