Animated films are one of my lesser favourites and I watched Zootopia before I knew anything about it, and this nearly-billion dollar hit and is indeed a success even for me. The film isn't so much for the little ones, it is a colourful whodunit driven by buddy humour and full of references to better known films that smaller children certainly won't get. It has amazing pacing, beautiful animation, literally breathtaking, all the details and animals look wonderful – the central duo is excellent: the rabbit is hilarious, the fox is properly cunning and smart. And on top fo that, the frequent twists are very unexpected and intelligent. Who knew that underneath the animated veneer was such a polished film that also tackles world issues like bullying and racism. The scene with the sloth is the highlight of the film !!! :) 100%
Preacher has the potential to be this year's number one series, the question is how over the top will the sci-fi elements be? As for the action, it's both very imaginative and decently hard-hitting, with the very first episode offering three solid fights in three great locations (plane, car, pub), but they definitely could have been more brutal. The Preacher himself may have left me cold after the first episode, but Cassidy and Tulip seem like great creatures that could pull the series along.
A great ride for 18 episodes, but the last 4 didn't impress me too much. The creators mixed way too many things with mutated "monster" people, turning a dark crime drama into more of a sci-fi fantasy, which I'm not fond of. Too bad. 80%.
Outbreak was on a completely different level even though it is 16 years older. Contagion has a solid cast, but it lacks the suspense or climactic contagion scenes. Very light. 55%.
I was expecting more from Antoine Fuqua, who lured Hong Kong star Chow Yun-fat into his actioner. It has a decent pace, but the film feels very B-ish and doesn't offer much besides decent shootouts. A 90's B-movie standard that will appeal to few today. 60%
Adam McKay is a pretty decent comedy director, and he's nicely assisted by Will Ferrel, who's always there for him. I'm not a fan of NASCAR racing, so this plot didn't interest me much, but I was pleased to see Sacha Baron Cohen as a gay Frenchman. There are some decent lines, but the running time is unnecessarily drawn out for a comedy. 60%.
I like these comedies very much. They are from life, contain wisdom and advice, and can also be great fun with decent gags. I enjoyed it, I laughed, I want to see it again. 80%.
Adam McKay and Will Ferrel are back together and they're doing great. A great story about two adult slackers who are forced to live under the same roof after their parents get married. From this point on, a game of hijinks, double-crosses and various contrivances that can be a decent trip on the diaphragm begins. At times literally almost trivial humour, but here it worked wonderfully. 80%
Although it wasn't exactly my cup of tea, I wasn't bored. The story is engaging, you root for the main character and the omnipresent atmosphere is more oppressive than the temperature in Africa. 75%
The biggest asset is the casting of solid comedians, but it seems to me that the film was only running at half throttle. I laughed a couple of times and wasn't bored, but given the premise and the actors a lot more could have been done – the attack on the kid and the dog were pretty over the top, though. 60%
This film tries to play at being something more than it is, and that hurts it. I found the story both uninteresting and overcomplicated, but there were some positives. The villain is great, his constant smiling is powerfully provoking and the massacre in the hospital is a strong moment in the film. For a debut, the film is visually decent and doesn't bore too much, but it's not enough for 4*. 60%.
A solid, intelligent and suspenseful thriller. Imagine your wife dies and a year from now on that day she calls you on the phone? And you have a unique chance to change your wife's future! From this point on, it's quite a gripping suspenseful ride full of interesting twists and turns, detective investigation and a decent denouement with one fight at the end. Surprise. 75%.
Boring, tedious, cheaply made with minimal action and no gore, so it absolutely can't come out positive for me. I didn't find any connection with the actors, so I didn't care how the film turned out. 30%
For an indie, it's a fine comedy. The most interesting thing is the premise, which is novel, and the orgy scenes are definitely the highlights of the film, although the filler around it is unfortunately not very funny anymore, but I had a pretty good time. 65%
So 3 stars. Adam Sandler and James Spade are a good pair and there are a few laughs, but overall the film is quite boring and mostly looks cheap, which may turn some people off. I don't recommend it 50%
I first saw Metropolis in 2011, and a decade later I decided to rewatch one of the greatest films of the first half of the 20th century. The novel's Thea von Harbou exhibits visionary traits, and Fritz Lang's adaptation is no different. As one of the last films of German Expressionism, Metropolis is no longer as highly stylized as, for example, Nosferatu or The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, but it still impresses with its monumental sets and unusual camera work. Story-wise, Metropolis manages to appeal even to today's viewers (despite the plethora of films about dystopian visions of the future), and thanks to the expressive acting (especially by Brigitte Helm and Rudolf Klein-Rogge), Lang's film is at times quite (unintentionally) funny.
A parody set to the sounds of czardas, full of truly funny moments and allusions to horror vampire classics, led by the excellent master of parody Leslie Nielsen, who knows very well how to entertain the viewer. Then there's the slightly different Van Helsing, who has fun intimidating students during dissections, or Dracula's crazy sidekick Renfield, who from time to time doesn't mind some of those leggy vermin from the ground. In short, one of the more hilarious parodies that doesn't reach the top of its genre, but it's easily enough for a solid 3*.
This legendary comedy, directed by Billy Wilder, still retains its wit and humour after half a century. The perfect performances of the main "male" duo Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon are complemented by the great Marilyn Monroe, who was really pretty. Lots of verbal innuendos, funny moments, catchy music, interesting supporting characters (Osgood), what more could you ask for. In short, "nobody's perfect", but this classic is in many ways the true equivalent of the word perfection.
In the spirit of the plethora of sequels, even Predator 2 can't match the first, but it's still a brisk action sci-fi flick with starring a famous alien whose biggest pastime is hunting people, now especially gangsters. I probably wouldn't watch it a second time, but as a patch over my free time this film is perfect. In short, one of many sci-fi sequels that is average in every way.
