O Ladrão Profissional (1981)

inglês The story of a principled criminal played by badass James Caan, a character you’d rather not have to deal with. Thief is perhaps the best example of Michael Mann’s mastery of dreamlike imagery. It’s just a phenomenal directional debut. What’s more, its soundtrack features Tangerine Dream’s unique music! I highly recommend the director’s cut, since it contains even more audiovisual delights. Here’s a movie that deserves more attention than it gets!

A Vingança (1981)

inglês Together with Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp, this film might complete the imaginary trilogy of the best early 80s camp slashers. It draws quite a lot of ideas from the former of the aforementioned in particular, but The Burning still follows a distinct path with some really wild scenes in stock. Pretty decent.

Aniversário Macabro (1981)

inglês With a decent formal level (and a wonderful music track), this slasher is just a tad too long. But that’s OK. Basically, the strong scene with the birthday party requires some patience before showing up. Another thing is that the final unveiling of the killer is quite a joke, cheating the viewer by making the preceding storyline somewhat irrelevant. It feels like the screenwriters were sweating with the script. All in all, slightly above the average slasher.

The Raven (1963)

inglês A symphony of classic horror actors – the legendary Vincent Price, the annoying Peter Lorre, the great villain Boris Karloff and a young Jack Nicholson. Where The Raven excels the most, though, is in its atmosphere – a gorgeous gothic mood made of music and stunning interiors. Roger Corman is perhaps a B-director, but a master of his art for sure, and this comedy never stops entertaining me!

O Profissional (1981)

inglês Hand claps to Ennio Morricone and hand claps to Jean-Paul Belmondo! The Professional is an adventure full of one-liners, humour and noir atmosphere.

Starman - O Homem das Estrelas (1984)

inglês A thrilling story of a shipwrecked alien (the Oscar-nominated Jeff Bridges) who wants to return home. You might argue that the topic has been revisited too many times today. Fair enough. However, John Carpenter completely infused Starman with his unique style and feel, so this sci-fi stands out and touches our hearts at many moments. Plus, the ending is brilliantly scripted. A lovely piece of nostalgia.

The Thing: Terror Takes Shape (1998)

inglês A documentary showcasing the shooting of all-time legendary horror The Thing. While watching, you will learn a lot of new and interesting information and, most of all, you will get to know the most distinctive faces of the creative team (Rob Bottin is a surprising showman!) Terror Takes Shape is certainly a must see for all fans of The Thing.

Eating Raoul (1982)

inglês The Blands, an inconspicuous married couple played by Paul Bartel and Mary Woronov, chance upon an unconventional way to collect money to open their own restaurant. With that in mind, they set out to tap into Los Angeles locals’ moral decay. A very entertaining flickled by its central actor duo and Bartel’s subtle direction. I’m just slightly surprised that, after the movie was released, the US authorities didn’t introduce a firearm licence for kitchen pans! It’s a pity Eating Raoul went almost unnoticed on this side of the globe and is so underrated.

RRRrrrr !!! (2004)

inglês To rate RRRrrrr!!! is quite a dilemma. On the one hand, it’s a bit of an infantile bunch of jokes, but on the other, some catchphrases have become popular over the years, many scenes have soaked into viewers’ memories, and one can’t deny the film is ridiculously fun (Maurice Barthélémy rocks!) A silly comedy which at times will leave you breathless.

Máj (2008) Boo!

inglês Some works of literature just won’t properly adapt to the screen. Some creators, though, confidently think they can handle those and go ahead. Well, here we are. It’s just a garbage. Karek Hynek Mácha must be rolling over in his grave.
