Bebê Rena - Episode 1 (2024) (episódio)

inglês Judging by most of the reviews, it seems like I might be the odd one out, but the pilot episode didn't quite hit the mark for me.  It left me feeling rather underwhelmed, so I was relieved when it finally wrapped up. I struggled to fully engage with the story, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that things take an unexpected turn and don't veer into pet-cooking territory. / Lesson learned: When dealing with unwanted romantic attention, choose your words very, very carefully.

Amar Singh Chamkila (2024)

inglês I'm not usually one for musicals or movies heavy on music, and India has never been my cup of tea. So, on paper, this film shouldn't have been my thing at all. But surprise, surprise — I actually enjoyed it! Quite a bit, in fact. The singer's life story intrigued me and once again reinforced my belief that fanatics of any kind are a toxic presence that society could do without. Plus, I even liked the quirky 80's Indian pop.

Jo Koy: Live from the Los Angeles Forum (2022) (programa)

inglês Jo Koy managed to redeem himself in my eyes with this special, especially after yesterday's somewhat disappointing experience from the Philippines. For the most part, I had a blast, particularly with his interaction with Dylan — it had me in stitches. But then... Right before the finale, Jo Koy veered away from his previously stellar humor and delved into political statements, completely tarnishing my overall impression of his performance. / Lesson learned: Serious political speeches kill the humor.

Jo Koy: In His Elements (2020) (programa)

inglês I was thrilled with Jo Koy's previous special, but this time, it felt like a letdown. Hyped up for his trademark humor and insights, I instead found myself bombarded with repetitive self-praise, constant nods to Filipino culture, and what felt like obligatory Netflix plugs. Laughs were scarce, and too often, I found myself watching unfamiliar faces instead of the comedian I came for. Now, as I reflect on it all, I can't find a reason to give it two stars. / Lesson learned: The higher the expectations, the bigger the letdown.

Jo Koy: Comin' in Hot (2019) (programa)

inglês Chelsea Handler kept mentioning Jo Koy in her special so much that she convinced me it was worth checking him out. And boy, was I glad I did! His Hawaiian performance was so entertaining that I couldn't resist giving it a five-star rating, even though the repeated sentences grated on me a bit. But in the end, it didn't matter much because Jo Koy won me over with his exploration of topics that don't often get the spotlight due to political correctness. It was a blast, and I'm definitely planning to catch his other two specials on Netflix. / Lesson learned: Malcolm was a brilliant prop. 5*-

O Marinheiro de Guerra (2023) (série)

inglês I'll admit that the story's initial development left me somewhat disappointed. I had envisioned something quite different. However, as the narrative progressed, I became captivated by the individual stories of people often overlooked in the grand narratives of war. These were not soldiers or naval officers, but ordinary civilians risking their lives on every voyage to thwart the Nazi regime. Their heroism, seldom rewarded with medals, is a testament to their unsung bravery. I appreciate how the series sheds light on these forgotten heroes, especially those who met tragic ends (especially on tankers). The acting performances were commendable, with special praise for Henrikke Lund Olsen, whose portrayal of Magdeli was excellent. While I'm not exactly a fan of child actors, her performance stood out to me. And while I have a fondness for the RAF, I couldn't help but notice their strong bias against education. / Lesson learned: Even survival can be a tragedy.

Marinheiro de Guerra - Episode 3 (2023) (episódio)

inglês The third and final episode of this compact miniseries wraps up the narrative in a satisfying manner. From the outset, it was clear that this wouldn't be a lighthearted affair, and I appreciate that. I've grown weary of the formulaic happy endings with their songs and dances. However, I can also imagine that if you're contemplating suicide, a series like this one could help you take that final step. / Lesson learned: You can't wait forever.

Marinheiro de Guerra - Episode 2 (2023) (episódio)

inglês Well, disappointment finally caught up with me. I was eagerly anticipating the convoy battles, but to my dismay, they were mostly relegated to the sidelines, happening just out of sight. Only a few fleeting scenes made it onto the screen. However, the creators had a different agenda in mind, one that took me by surprise — they crafted a poignant drama about underappreciated individuals. / Lesson learned: With each death on the rescue raft, you lose a friend but gain living space.

Marinheiro de Guerra - Episode 1 (2023) (episódio)

inglês The first episode of this three-part miniseries introduced the characters, sketched the future plot, and placed us firmly in the historical period. Now, the question remains: will the creators deliver a story that truly captivates? With a topic like the Atlantic convoys — an area that naturally piques my interest — I'm cautiously optimistic. / Lesson learned: There are moments in life when one would appreciate a glimpse into the future.

Fern Brady: Autistic Bikini Queen (2024) (programa)

inglês Today was a stand-up comedy jackpot for me. Netflix introduced me to Fern Brady, and boy, was it a discovery! It's becoming increasingly clear to me that comedians must be somehow mentally disturbed to excel in their craft. Right from the start, her unique accent and pleasantly husky voice grabbed my attention, and when she backed it up with top-notch jokes, I knew I was in for a treat. Needless to say, I had a blast. / Lesson learned: Every volunteer should take a page out of Ollie's book.
