The framing story is set in a train car, where five passengers have their fortunes told by the all-seeing Dr. Schreck (Peter Cushing), who refers to his ominous tarot deck as his "House of Horrors." Their respective stories involve all manner of occult happenings: a jazz musician's involvement with a voodoo curse; an estate haunted by a werewolf; a doctor (Donald Sutherland) who suspects that his wife has become a vampire; a cottage besieged by a monster kudzu vine; and segment, in which arrogant art critic Christopher Lee is avidly pursued by a snubbed artist's severed hand. O início, em que Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Donald Sutherland e três outros companheiros de viagem entram sucessivamente num compartimento, examinando-se mutuamente e definindo as suas semelhanças sociais através de reações, é genial. Por isso é uma pena que os eventos da vida futura que Cushing começa a adivinhar das suas cartas, são apenas suficientes para seis histórias de «terror» bastante ridículas. Apenas uma delas é mais interessante (Lee) e a outra tem um ponto surpreendente (Sutherland). Por coincidência, a última, que é depois seguida por outro ponto final da história. E estas juntas são suficientes para levar a história a uma conclusão agradável.

Dr. Terror's House of Horrors is a rather nice example of classic 1960s horror that still tries to capture the dark atmosphere of gothic horror, but it falls a bit short in various aspects, and it can be quite boring. The stories don't have the necessary drive and in the end, the atmosphere doesn't really hold up. Well, not always, which is the main problem. Some of the short stories would work great on their own.
