Bawoonti heonteoseu

EvilPhoEniXBawoonti heonteoseu(2016)

inglês I didn't like this at all. The whole film is so infantile and awkward that I felt ashamed at times. Weird technology, humor that doesn't work, it's all too colorful and overwrought. In short it has everything an action movie shouldn't have, weird villain included. The only surprise was the decent fights, which were fun to watch, the rest of the action was like something out of Spy Kids. 40%

Star Trek: Além do Universo

EvilPhoEniXStar Trek: Além do Universo(2016)

inglês Considering that Star Wars and Star Trek are completely out of my league, I'm happy with this installment. I wasn't bored, I didn't roll my eyes at the strange entities, the action and visual effects were good, the acting was decent too, so I'm satisfied. 75%

Desierto

EvilPhoEniXDesierto(2015)

inglês A fairly enjoyable manhunt that is sweetly brutal in places, suspenseful, with the desolate desert adding to the atmosphere. The film runs out of breath a bit towards the end, but it's still an enjoyable addition to the cat and mouse survival thrillers. The uncompromising Jeffrey Dean Morgan with his sniper rifle and sharp dog was solid. 65%

O Infiltrado

EvilPhoEniXO Infiltrado(2016)

inglês I wasn't expecting too much and despite the slower pace I wasn't bored. Bryan Cranston does a great job and the film is decently suspenseful at times, thanks to some disturbing moments and business. There is some blood and the finale is more than passable. Those who like Mexican cartels will be satisfied. 75%

Nerve - Alto Risco

EvilPhoEniXNerve - Alto Risco(2016)

inglês A pleasantly modern thrilling ride that is frightening in how real it is and highlights the flaws of our times. Nerve has a nice pace, an attractive Emma Roberts, and playful visuals, and it manages to mine some decent suspense. One of those films that can be recommended to all from both an educational and entertainment point of view. 80%

Um Corpo Para Sobreviver

EvilPhoEniXUm Corpo Para Sobreviver(2016)

inglês The film's excess of originality and bizarreness can by no means be denied, but it was probably too much for me. I didn't have much fun. I didn't find it funny at all, but there are some thought-provoking dialogues and the scene with the bear is quite good. The melancholic ending was the biggest highlight, it evoked emotions in me and played the right notes. 60%.

The Siege of Jadotville

EvilPhoEniXThe Siege of Jadotville(2016)

inglês Netflix is on! The Siege of Jadotville is an enjoyable war movie about a bunch of Irish soldiers with no experience, no ammo, no support, no proper base in the middle of nowhere in Africa against multiple odds, who also don't play fair. From the 30 minute mark, nonstop warfare with the likeable Jamie Dornan in the lead role. A surprise on a modest budget. 85%.

Nem Respires

EvilPhoEniXNem Respires(2016)

inglês I'm a little perplexed by Fede Alvarez's praised new release this year. Don't Breathe won both me and most fans over with its stylish trailer, but the film, although good, failed to captivate me much. I took the top-notch visuals and brisk pace for granted here, so I don't take these as plus points, translating more into minor downsides that distracted me while watching. Stephen Lang looks tough and commands respect, but he hardly speaks for the whole film, which bothered me, they could have given teasing dialogues threatening the thieves. Also, the guy who handled the sound would have deserved a slap, which at least for me took away the jump scares (for example, the scene with the dog, we see it three seconds before it barks, which lost the effect in me). The film is hardly brutal at all, compared to Evil Dead it keeps very low key, which also irritated me. None of the deaths are effective or interesting, and in fact there was a memorable scene missing that made me want to watch it again. The one twist that flickers throughout also doesn't hold much interest. All in all, an entertaining and at times suspenseful home invasion flick that masks its ordinariness with an original villain, but Evil Dead was a tribute much closer to my heart. Story 6/10, Atmosphere 8/10, Gore 2/10, Visuals 8/10, Action 6/10, Suspense 7/10, Humor 0/10. Entertainment 8/10, Scares 1/10. 70%.

Fear, Inc.

EvilPhoEniXFear, Inc.(2016)

inglês A pretty decent horror comedy that favors the humor rather than the horror aspect. There is practically no gore at all, but plenty of allusions to horror movies. There are a few interesting twists throughout, culminating in an unexpected finale. 60%

Operação Antropoide

EvilPhoEniXOperação Antropoide(2016)

inglês A solid performance with the likeable Cillian Murphy/Jamie Dornan duo. The first half is a bit too slow for me, but after the assassination the film picks up decently, there are some disturbing scenes and it all culminates with an excellent church shootout that has a lot of pizzazz and drive. A decent film about us. 75%

Profissão: Perigo

KakaProfissão: Perigo(2024)

inglês A tribute to a difficult profession, which it's a shame doesn't have its own category at the Oscars. Fall Guy is certainly not popcorn for everyone, which is why it will have a difficult time with high box office and general acceptance. For the average viewer, it's far too loaded with references, innuendo and props that not everyone will register. But for film buffs, it's great fanservice. Ryan Gosling confirms that he's great at the role of likable muscular cool good guys, and it suits him much more than the roles of tough agents in crap like The Gray Man. The only thing I found downright annoying is the weird "just to make something happen" style storyline, which pretty much spoils the overall look and dynamic of the film. The heart, on the other hand, pulses as hard as it can and the central couple is cute.

Leave the World Behind

KakaLeave the World Behind(2023)

inglês A more thoughtful, tense and overall more minimalist version of Civil War with a gradually escalating atmosphere in the style of Take Shelter. Technically outstanding. Great cinematography and editing. Superb acting, a shame some elements were left unexplained and perhaps the conclusion was too rushed given the carefully constructed build up to the finale.

La Plus Précieuse des marchandises

IviDvoLa Plus Précieuse des marchandises(2024)

inglês Once upon a time, there was a poor woodcutter and his wife, they did their best to survive – the story takes place during wartime and winter. One day, a small precious cargo falls out of a passing train and turns their lives upside down. I don't want to give away more of the story because I think that if you don't find out anything about the film beforehand, its development is quite unpredictable, and that's what I liked about it. At times poignant, at times dramatic and chilling... I think the animation was very well suited for this kind of story, and it's all nicely illustrated by Alexandre Desplat's haunting score. [Festival de Cannes 2024]

Once

StanislausOnce(2007)

inglês Once is a sweet and simple story about a talented pair of artists brought together by their love of music. The film and its characters come across as likeable and simple, but that's not a bad thing at all. And the song "Falling Slowly" definitely deserved the Oscar. In short, a film that's perfect for enjoying a leisurely moment.

Celebridades

StanislausCelebridades(1998)

inglês Celebrity is one of Woody Allen's weaker films for me, which is a real shame because the cast alone made me think it was going to be an acting tour de force. Unfortunately, it didn't happen in any significant way. Kenneth Branagh is a good actor, and here his character reminded me a bit of Marcello Mastroianni in La Dolce Vita, a journalist who captures celebrities who are just as naughty as he is. Leonardo DiCaprio is probably the one that irritated me the most, I like him, but here his short-tempered character really got on my nerves. And even though it was a comedy, I probably only had fun during Branagh's school reunion, and that’s far from enough. In short, a film that may be for a different audience than me, because I can't explain it any other way.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

StanislausJay and Silent Bob Strike Back(2001)

inglês This time, this crazy duo of comedians decides to go to Hollywood to put things “right” and on the way, they both manage to make quite a mess. On the whole, I liked Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back a little less than the very similar Dogma. I was intrigued by all the movie references and little cameos (e.g. Wes Craven and Gus Van Sant), but some of the jokes were a bit off, which is not unusual for this bunch, but I'm not really into that. In short, a very typical American comedy that parodies all sorts of things but entertains within reason.

Paranoid Park

StanislausParanoid Park(2007)

inglês Paranoid Park is especially opaque and confusing in places, and sometimes it took me a while to get my bearings (if I could at all). The premise is interesting and engaging and tells an uneasy story in the life of one teenager, which is hardly the first or last we’ve seen. Some of the scenes were really nicely done visually, but in sum, this film didn't hit me enough to make me think about it any longer. In short, the potential was there, but it was left somewhere untapped.

Lanterna Verde

StanislausLanterna Verde(2011)

inglês One of those films in which the visuals (and especially the effects) trump everything else, leaving only a series of pretty pictures that lack any deeper meaning. The plot was simple (and totally clichéd), but unlike the script, it didn't annoy that much. And I definitely enjoyed this "rookie" a lot more than either the Hulk or Superman (I hate him!). All in all, a visually beautiful spectacle that, while at times was toe-curling (the dialogues), was a feast for the eyes.

Murder, She Wrote: South by Southwest

StanislausMurder, She Wrote: South by Southwest(1997)

inglês Even if the viewers here despise the annoying and old Jessica Fletcher, I quite liked this unpretentious and relaxing detective story. The plot was good because I didn't suspect the right culprit for a moment before the reveal. In short, a movie with a famous writer in a movie format that's good for filling up one's free time.

Contágio

StanislausContágio(2011)

inglês Contagion is a prime example of the combination of a skilful director, excellent performances and a compellingly authentic premise. It is not only about a virus that is spreading dangerously and killing masses of people, but especially about fear, which is the most destructive human emotion. All the actors were perfect (Jude Law handled his bad guy perfectly), the story was dynamic and the ending was typically American. In short, a realistic look at the disaster of a pandemic and all the causes and effects that go with it.
